Deer are a common site in Pennsylvania, and collisions with these animals are unfortunately more frequent than anyone would like. While you can take every precaution to avoid hitting deer, there may come a time when a collision is just unavoidable. In case of such an accident, it’s recommended that you take the following steps.

1.       Check that everyone is all right

Before anything else, you’ll want to see if you or your passengers are injured. Larger deer can not only total your vehicle, but they can cause significant harm to the people inside. If anyone is hurt, call an ambulance right away.

2.       Move your car

You’ll want to move your car off to the side of the road and put on your hazard lights. Do not move or touch the deer, even if you believe it is deceased.

3.       Document the accident

If it’s safe, take pictures of the accident zone. You’ll want to document the damage to your car, the deer, the road, and any signs that may be around.

4.       Call the police

If the deer is blocking traffic in some way, you’ll want to call your local police non-emergency line. You should call 911 if there are injuries to you or anyone in the car or if there’s been property damage.

5.       Check your car

Some deer accidents may lead to minor bumps or dents, while others can completely total your vehicle. Check to see if there are any leaking fluids or loose components. If the damage is extensive, you may need to call a tow truck so that you aren’t driving in unsafe conditions.

6.       Call your insurance company

Once the police report is filed, you’ll want to call your insurance company to file a claim. This way, you can see if there is any coverage on costs when you bring your car to a collision repair shop.
