How to Sanitize Your Car

Disinfect Commonly Used Surfaces

It may be tempting to reach for a bottle of bleach, Clorox wipes, and a roll of paper towels, but doing so may cause irreparable damage to your car. Any products containing bleach will eat away at the surfaces of your car, especially organic materials such as leather. Paper towels, though they may not seem like it, are highly abrasive to car finishes and should be avoided as well.

The recommended method to disinfect the interior of your car is to spray an isopropyl alcohol solution on potentially contaminated surfaces and gently wipe it away with a clean terry cloth. This strategy is the go-to method for car manufacturers and car assembly plants alike.

Vacuum Out the Nooks and Crannies

While running a vacuum through your car will do little to remove germs or viruses, it will drastically improve the air quality in the cabin. Shake out the floor mats and let them rest in the sun as you clean. Wear a face mask to avoid inhaling dust, pollen, and other contaminants that have embedded themselves in the nooks and crannies of your car and upholstery. By removing these contaminants, you will protect your lungs from any irritants that could exacerbate sickness or allergies.

Check the Air Filters

It’s easy to forget that most cars have at least two air filters to remove airborne contaminants that could make their way into the cabin or engine. Fresh, clean air, free of pollen, dust, or other irritants will keep your airway healthy and will have other benefits including a clean smelling car.

If you are unsure of how to check your air filters, refer to your owners manual. If the filters appear dirty or need to be replaced, our service center has these parts on hand and can complete the installation for you.
